Themed Trivia: The Overview

Themed Trivia

All guidesBy Michael Szerencsy@michael

Quick Ten deals from all twenty topics. Themed Trivia turns that around: pick one thing you love, say Dogs, Christmas, US Presidents or Word Origins, and every question in the game is about it. Each pack has its own leaderboard, and your themed games build a record of their own on your profile. This guide covers how it all works and where it sits beside the other Outlier games.

What Themed Trivia is

A pack is a deep set of questions on one theme, and every game deals ten of them. The packs live on the Themed Trivia page, grouped into shelves like Seasonal, Pets & animals, Vocabulary and History stories, each pack in its own colour with its own icon.

Some packs were written from scratch for their theme, like Halloween, Dogs, US Presidents and Collective Nouns. Others gather every question on one subject from the main trivia bank, so a space fan can play nothing but space. Either way, each pack is split into numbered games, Game #1 onward, and you play them in turn, with any game holding questions you've already met moved to the back of your queue.

New packs go live in waves. Anything marked Coming soon has a Request it button, and the requests help decide which packs get finished first.

How a game works

  1. Pick a packTap any live pack on the Themed Trivia page. Its page shows the mix of easy to very hard questions and how many free themed games you have left.
  2. Press PlayPlay opens the game on its own page and deals your ten questions. You don't need to sign in to try it.
  3. Read, then answerEach question shows first, and the 15-second clock only starts when the four choices go live. A right answer inside 2 seconds pays 100, sliding to 80 at the buzzer. A wrong answer or a timeout pays nothing.
  4. See how you didThe results show your score out of 1,000, how you did at each difficulty, and where you stand on the pack's board.

Games follow the same spread as Quick Ten: 2 easy, 3 medium, 3 hard, 1 expert and 1 very hard. The order is shuffled, so the easiest question in the game can follow the hardest one.

Free games and Keepers

Everyone gets ten free themed games to try, in any packs they like: all of them in Halloween, say, or spread across Dogs and Word Origins. Each counts as soon as it's dealt, so leaving halfway doesn't give it back. The Themed Trivia page and every pack page show how many you've played.

Pack leaderboards

Live packs each have their own board, with All time and This week tabs. The week starts on Monday at midnight Eastern. Players are ranked on average score over at least two games in that pack, with the faster, more precise score breaking a tie, so playing your free games in one pack is enough to get you on. Most pack boards are still short, so the top spot in a pack you know well can be a couple of good games away. The board link sits under Play on every pack page.

Themed points on your profile

Your Trivia profile has a Themed points card: your average score across every themed game you've played, out of 1,000, plus your best game, how many you got right and how you did at each difficulty. After a few themed games you also get a Themed rank among everyone who plays them. Below that, each pack you've played has its own card with your games, your average and your place on its board.
