Show someone OUTLIER for the first time and there's a good chance they'll say: oh, a word search. They're not wrong. You get a grid of letters, you stare at it, and words start surfacing. But a word search hands you the answers in advance and asks you to find them. OUTLIER hands you nothing. No list, no hints, just 25 letters and one question: what's the rarest real word you can pull out of them? Same grid, opposite puzzle.
The short version
Both are hunts through a field of letters. One ends with a satisfied pencil tap. The other ends with a worldwide rank and a word you can't stop thinking about.
No list, no limits
A word search is a promise kept. Somebody hid twenty words, printed them down the side, and you're guaranteed every one is in there. Your eyes sweep the rows, you spot the first letter, you trace the rest, you circle it. Lovely. Also finished the moment the list runs out.
OUTLIER removes the list, and that one change cracks the puzzle wide open. Now the grid holds hundreds of possible words and nobody has told you which. The letters don't even have to sit next to each other: any of the 25 tiles is fair game, as long as you don't use a letter more times than it appears.
So you're not finding words anymore. You're choosing them. Picture a board with an S, a T, an O, an N and an E. STONE jumps out at everybody, and it pays like the everyday word it is. If that same grid has a second N, someone sharp will see TENON, the woodworking joint, a far rarer word built from almost the same letters.
The obvious word is the trap
In a word search, the words that leap off the page are a gift. Spot one, circle it, tick it off. In OUTLIER they're bait. The word your eye lands on first is the one everyone's eye lands on, and Common words top out at +50.
The real skill is the second look. You see CRANE, then you wonder whether there's something stranger behind it: a bird nobody names, a term from a hobby, a word you last saw in an old novel. That flicker of "wait, is that a word?" is where the points live. Get it right and you've found something most of the planet walked past.
Guessing wrong doesn't hurt much, either. A word that's too short is free, so you can test an idea without burning a slot.
Ten picks, then lock it in
A word search has a natural ending: the list is empty, you're done. OUTLIER makes you decide when you're done. You get ten guesses, and every one is a little bet. Spend a slot on a solid Rare now, or hold out for the Legendary you're half sure exists?
When you lock in, your score is final and you get a rank on today's worldwide board. Most days that takes about five minutes. And because a fresh grid drops at noon ET for everyone, tomorrow is a clean slate, with streaks and Seasons if you like keeping a tally.
One small twist for regulars: a word you've played a lot recently pays a little less. That favorite you lean on every week will nudge you to find a new one.
A special share
Search with the whole world watching
A word search book is a private thing. OUTLIER is the same 25 letters for every player on Earth, so a good find isn't just good, it's good compared with everyone. And when you want company in real time, there's a lot more around the board.
Live has a bonus that word search fans tend to love: you learn words as you play, because the reveal puts everyone's finds side by side.
I love that during the live games, between rounds, you can click on the word and see a definition.
