As a photographer, I knew about using close-up accessory lenses, measured in dioptres. 1 dioptre = focal length 1 metre; 2 dioptres = f.l. 0.5 metre, and so on.

I don't know; I just had a notion that it was a Scots word, but had to look up its meaning (a fright or scare). As with numerous of my finds, the meaning or usage I know is completely different to the one given in Outlier.
