Where it comes from
Inherited from Old English wær, from Proto-West Germanic *wār, from Proto-Germanic *wēraz, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁ros. This word had always meant “true” ever since PIE times. It is cognate with German wahr, Dutch waar (“true”) and Latin verus (whence verity, verify and very), all likewise meaning “true”.
