Learned borrowing from Late Latin trapezium, borrowed from Ancient Greek τρᾰπέζῐον (trăpézĭon, “irregular quadrilateral”, literally “small table”), from τράπεζα (trápeza, “table”) + -ιον (-ion, diminutive suffix). First attested in 1570. Doublet of trapeze.
