Inherited from Middle English spalden, from either Middle Dutch spalden (“to spilt”) or Middle Low German spalden (“to spilt”), ultimately from or related to Proto-West Germanic *spilþijan (“to destroy, spoil, ruin”). Cognate with German spalten (“to split”), Danish spalte (“to split”), Norwegian spalte (“to split”), Swedish spalta (“to split”).
