Where it comes from
Borrowed from Hindustani (Hindi साड़ी (sāṛī) / Urdu سَاڑِی (sāṛī)), in turn derived from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀲𑀸𑀟𑀻 (sāḍī), from Sanskrit शाटी (śāṭī), from शाट (śāṭa, “strip of cloth”). Doublet of shawl through Persian.
