Borrowed from Medieval Latin punctuātiō (“a marking with points, a writing, agreement”), from punctuō (“to mark with points, settle”). Morphologically, punctuate + -ion. Coined in the French dialogue book Orthoepia Gallica, translated by John Eliot in 1593.
