Borrowed from Hindustani (Hindi पुलाव (pulāv) / Urdu پُلاؤ (pulāo)), from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀧𑀼𑀮𑀸𑀕 (*pulāga), from Sanskrit पुलाक (pulāka), probably of Dravidian origin. Doublet of pilaf.
