Where it comes from

From Anglo-Norman poleine (“(shoe with a) pointed toe”) and Middle French poulaine (“(shoe with a) pointed toe”), apparently from Old French poulain (“Polish”) (compare crackow), the style being supposed to be Polish. Possibly related to poleyn (“knee armor”).
