Borrowed from Latin marsūpial, from marsūpiālis (“of a purse”) and marsūpium (“purse, pouch”), from Ancient Greek μαρσύπιον (marsúpion) or μαρσύππιον (marsúppion), variants of μαρσίππιον (marsíppion), diminutive of μάρσιππος (mársippos, “bag, pouch”).
