Borrowed from French grenade, from Old French grenate in the phrase pomme grenate (“pomegranate”), ultimately from Medieval Latin pōmum (“apple”) + grānātum (“having grains”). The -d developed in French under influence of Spanish granada. Doublet of garnet.
