A marketing coinage, likely an altered pronunciation of Mandarin 枸杞 (gǒuqǐ). The earliest known usage in print was in a publication in 1996. The first usage in the LexisNexis database is a newspaper article in 2002. Wider usage began in 2003 and 2004.
