From Middle English brame, from Old French brame, bram (“a cry of pain or longing; a yammer”), of Germanic origin, from Frankish *brammjan, ultimately from Proto-Germanic *bramjaną (“to roar; bellow”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrem- (“to make a noise; hum; buzz”).
