Knapsacks. I’ve no earthly idea why humans have so many different names for purses. I truly believe that inventing infinite devices for gathering, toting, and storing stuff is an almost spiritual aspect of being human. We value portability. We should have congenital pockets.
Roman legionaries had a type of marching pack formation called Sarcinae. We call the bacteria Sarcinae because it is shaped like a little packet or cube of eight cells all clumped together. Sarcinae means bundle in Latin. Didn’t everyone have a “this is Sparta phase?” Just me?
There’s something subversive about taking an English word and reconfiguring it into one’s native tongue. The birth of a new word with a new definition. But now it is specific to one’s own culture. We shift from custodians of the English language to Co-owners.
